Environmental soil survey at the Courtyard Marriott development site

During the geotechnical survey at the site of this future hotel, a high level of mineral oil contamination was discovered in the subsoil. The further survey:

  • determined the level and area of the soil contaminated with oil
  • established the quality of the groundwater within the contamination contour

The survey can be used for future excavation works for the purpose of new construction. The contaminated soil can then be excavated and removed safely, environmentally responsibly and cost-effectively.

Geotechnical survey of RIMA-pier Parera Naval Base

Work carried out:

  • Heavy cone penetration tests were carried out at 21 locations on the water from pontoons (DPT-H)
  • Each position was located accurately using GPS
  • Each individual cone penetration test was graphically illustrated and a length profile created for the block wall to be constructed

Asbestos inventory Basilica Sta Ana

The inspection involved the interior of the church, the main hall and the balcony. Various asbestos-containing materials (ACM) were detected in the building.
In terms of the asbestos-containing materials detected, it was determined that there is currently no immediate risk to people or the environment. No temporary screening measures were therefore required.

Environmental survey of sediment and water testing, Mangroves `t-Rif, Otrobanda

The `t-Rif mangrove forest in Otrobanda, Curaçao is a unique area which remained after the poldering of the Rif-water a hundred years ago. It is situated close to the historical districts and the entrance to Willemstad – the Megapier. In order to optimize the use of this piece of nature in the city, the government has formulated plans to develop the mangroves as a recreational area for tourists and islanders. For this reason UO Domeinbeheer asked us to carry out a survey of the water and sediment quality.

The following work was carried out:

  • Large-scale exploratory sediment survey of a total of approx. 120,000 m2 in compliance with NEN 5720
  • Survey of the general quality of the surface water
  • Survey of bacterial contamination of the surface water and sediment
  • Survey of the salinity of the water
  • Survey of the quality of inflowing rainwater
  • Various demarcating surveys arising from contaminants discovered

Survey of composition and construction of road foundations, Road to Westpunt

At the instruction of MNO-Vervat, CEGE undertook this survey of the composition and construction of the road foundations of the Road to Westpunt, within the section from Grote Berg to the Soto exit (Curaçao). This is due to the intention to upgrade the road in the short term. The works were carried out in consultation with and according to the design of the government’s Public Works Implementation Organization (UOOW).

Traffic management measures were deployed during the works (partial road closure). Core drillings were made in the asphalt surface in 17 locations, after which bore holes to a depth of 70 cm were augured in the foundation material (diabase). The material released was analyzed further in the laboratory. The following properties were identified as a result:

  • Particle size distribution of the foundation material under the asphalt in accordance with NEN 2560
  • Hardness (crush factor) in accordance with NEN EN 1097-2
  • Description and classification of the bored-out material

Geotechnical and surface survey at BES islands airports

This large-scale multidisciplinary project was carried out on three airports in the BES islands as a result of proposed civil engineering works.

Work carried out:

  • Drilling of core samples in the existing concrete and asphalt surfaces then sealed with concrete
  • Performing geotechnical field tests: Standard Penetration Test (SPT)
  • Land survey

Implementation of various in-situ and laboratory analyses and tests, including:

  • Determine thickness of asphalt layers (construction composition) in accordance with ASTM D 3549
  • Proctor test in accordance with D 1557
  • Crushing factor
  • California Bearing Ratio (CBR) dry and soaked tests in accordance with ASTM D1883-07
  • Description and classification of bored-out materials
  • Dynamic Cone Penetration (DCP) tests in accordance with ASTM D6951/D6951M-09
  • Determine compressive strength of concrete in accordance with NEN-EN 12504-1
  • Point Load tests in accordance with ASTM D5731-08
  • Uniaxial Compressive Strength in accordance with ASTM D7012
  • Moisture content in accordance with ASTM D2216

Soil survey and indoor air survey on the Road to Jenkins Bay

The plan is to construct a temporary school building adjacent to the location of the former landfill. To exclude human toxicology risks, the following works were carried out:

  • Sampling and analysis of the indoor air in the future classrooms in association with the perceived aroma of solvents. Critical parameters: volatile chlorinated hydrocarbons (VOCl), volatile aromatics and mineral oil
  • Sampling and analysis of soil in order to establish the soil quality

Geotechnical survey of the Unirama Wind Farm’s foundations

Work carried out:

  • Three cone penetration tests (DPTs) were carried out for each foundation.
  • Based on the results of the DPTs, twelve SPT bore holes combined with core bore holes were carried out to approx. 15 m -mv), including sampling and classification
  • Samples were transported to Curaçao for the implementation of Point Load and Compressive Strength tests in the laboratory

Bonaire Roads inventory

The project area consisted of most surfaced and some unsurfaced roads on Bonaire. An overall cost estimate was compiled based on the overall picture of the technical condition of the roads.

Work carried out:

  • Application of road barriers including applications for traffic permits
  • Placing of around 400 bore holes in the road surface and underlying foundations
  • Compilation of descriptions of bored-out materials
  • Determine construction composition of asphalt: top layer, grading, binder, impregnation
